Wine Cellar Berserk at Christina and Claes 2007-11-24

As can be seen from the notes below, the theme was "years ending with 8". We guessed this when the Barolo was disclosed.

1988 Champagne, Chaque Selosse

Yellow colour. Wonderful smell of toast and maturness, with freshness well preserved. A tasty acidity, excellent balance and perfect maturity. Complex and rich with lovely elegance of Chardonnay. Very good, say 97 points.

1988 Champagne, Krug

Yellow colour. Unfortunately a slight cork damage mask complexity and finesse. Despite this the smell is quite excellent. Corky also in the taste, very good balance and still very youthful. If trying to disregard the cork damage, the previous wine was probably slightly better.

1958 Barolo, Borgogno

Rather light orange red colour. A bit over the hill in the smell, linoleum and Sherry like. No evidence of over matureness  in the taste, still very fresh and lofty, with enough fruit to cover the bones. Accompany food very good. 93 points.

1968 Marques de Murietta, Castillo Ygay

Middle deep, brick red colour. Dill and wet old wood accompanied with irritable acidities gave a smell hint of Tempranillo and Rioja. Also some acidity in the taste, although soft and round. As so often, these wines lack fatness in the fruit. As good as the above with 93 points.

1978 Romanée St Vivant, DRC

Middle deep, brick red colour. Sweet smell of varnish and rotten strawberries, almost a caricature, but lovely and enthralling. The taste is boney and not up to the standard of the smell, which make up a high point of 97. Fantastic.

1988 la Moline, Guigal

Middle deep, brick red colour. A discrete smell of smoke and bacon, typical and very good. The taste is the point, powerful although perfectly balanced in a very classic way. I have tasted the 1988 la Turque and remeber that wine much better ?. Despite this we have here a 97 point wine.

1998 Clos St Urbain, SGN, Zind-Humbrecht

Amber colour. A lot of delicious botrytis (Swedish old bear glue), powerful and exotic. A delicious taste as well, fine acidity and freshness, a lot of fruit and again the fine acidity. Long after taste characterized by noble rot.

Wines

Triple appetizer:
- Whitefish Roe on Blinier (Russian pancake)
- Duck’s Liver Canapé
- Pepper Soup with Scallop Saint-Jacques
1994 Beringer Chardonnay Sbragia Limited Release
Golden yellow colour. Strong and powerful smell of fruit, oak, citrus and wool. Like a really good Bourgogne. The taste with a bang, lovely, oaky with long after taste. Very impressive.

1990 Faiveley Charmes Chambertin
Medium brick red. Not very typical Burgundy, more forest than strawberries. Elegant and well made, but lacks a "wow" feeling. Soft and mature, somewhat rough and short of fruit. Fine after taste.

Tusk and Salmon Carpaccio
with Cucumber, Garden Cress and Trout Roe
1975 Leo Buring Dw E17 Show Reserve
Deep yellow. Suspicious smell of over ripe apples and vapid pear soda. Good acidity in the taste, but shy fruit, with a bitter after taste. Not a crowds pleaser.

1983 Domaine Trimbach Riesling Frederic Emile Vendange Tardive
Yellow colour. Typical Riesling in the nose, strong  and crisp, very easy to love. Stylish, mineral, dry taste but without shortage of fat.

1989 Domaine Zind Humbrecht Riesling Brand Vendange Tardive
Deep yellow colour. Fat riesling, not the typical petrol bomb as above, but much more powerful and broad. The taste is totally wonderful, fat, acid, sweet and fruity. Everybody's favourite.

2002 Brundlmeyer Heiligenstein Lyra
Light green-yellow colour. Young Riesling, grass and rhubarb. High acidity, young also in the taste, but with good concentration. Very much preferred by the guest berserks, but not my cup of tea.

Fish and Shellfish Soufflé
with Herb Recess
Pea Purée
with Cream on Goat’s Milk Cheese
1990 Chapoutier Chateauneuf du Pape Barbe Rac
Medium, brick colour. Stable smell like a Bordeaux, rotten strawberries like a Burgundy, dill from a Rioja. Really a lovely complex impression. Not as soft as expected, the wine has gained some body over the last years. Balanced and delicious. But the smell is the most memorable.
Fillet of Beef Salad
with Celery and Truffles Oil
1953 Chateau Montrose
Medium brick red. Mushroom and dill, the lovely wee bit of sweetness, toast, stable, and all other typical old Bordeaux characters. Silky and soft, with adequate tannins and acidity, still good fruit still intact. An open glass left until the morning breakfast was still lively and fresh, highly impressive old thing.
Pie on Goat’s Milk Cheese
with Walnuts served with Acacia Honey
1970 Taylor Vintage Port
Dark brick red. Classic port wine, nuts and almonds, mature, balanced smell. Also soft and well integrated in the taste, violets, angel singing and plush.
Vanilla Pannacotta
with fruit skewer
1949 Moulin Tochais, Coteaux du Layon
Light amber yellow. Some dishing cloth, wax, candlegrease and honey. Bitter unripe apples in the taste. Stodgy and somewhat oxidised. This wine was a in fact disappointment.
Coffee
with a plainness piece of chocolate
1996 Oberhäuser Brücke Auslese, Dönnhof, Nahe
Yellow colour. Mineral and cold smell, typical German Riesling, pure and well made. Lovely acidity in the taste with a crisp sweetness, beginning to get integrated and balanced.

1988 Salon

Rather light colour. Intense smell of bread and yeast. Elegant, stylish but maybe a little too classic for my preference. Not the same go in the taste as in the smell, a lot of bread and style, but lacks cream in the fruit. 92 points.

1995 Dom Perignon

Medium yellow. Fat and full in the smell, soft and round but not on the cost of complexity. Fat and rich also in the taste, soft, lovely, more like a powerful still white wine. For me this was clearly the best of the two Champagnes, but the other tasters judged dead heat. I think 95 points.

Foie Gras de Volaille

et Champignons frit au cognac

(Kycklinglever och champignoner i cognac)

1995 Charmes-Cahmbertin Vieilles Vignes, Joseph Roty

Medium deep, brick tone.. Bacon and meat nose led me to Côte Rôtie, a fine perfume on a solid bottom. There is however a disturbing mysterious hard edge in the smell, which hopefully will turn softer with further ageing. Rather soft in the taste, with some maturity. A point in the mid ninety level. Interestingly Gunnel did reject this wine when we had it only a week before this tasting. Certainly she didn't like it too much, but was not nearly as hard now as she then was. For me it is 95 points if that hard edge will soften away.

1990 Clos de Vougeot, Daniel Rion

Medium brick red colour. Violets, bacon, grass and forest, again took me to Côte Rôtie. But a burgundy was more apparent in the taste. The fruit was a bit to low to hide the dry tannins, but it is a very good 92 point wine.

Contre-filet d'Agneau

avec Gratin Dauphinois

(Lammfilé med potatisgratin)

1996 Araujo Cabernet Sauvignon Eisele Vineyard

Dark ruby red colour. A bit herbaceous and silky smell, like a Pomerol (wrong again). Fat and full of glycerine, soft and rich charming taste, very good. Equally quality as the below, 95 points.

1996 Opus One, Napa

Dark ruby red. A guessed on a typical Pauillac (this was certainly not a bad guess, but as you can see above one of too many failed chances from me). Cedar, lead pencil, well made and tight. A very slimmed and well-mannered taste, still a Pauillac wine for me. The best Opus One I have tasted, about 95 points.

Fromage Italien

Confiture à la Féte de Noël

(Taleggio della Grotta med Victors julmarmelad)

Tiramisú

1984 Moulin Tochais

Deep yellow colour. As Gunnel stated, a "wolly Botrytis" leads to Loire. A good acidity bottom that carry the rest. Not overly complex, more on the power side.

Due to sad booking mistakes The Sandahls family did not show up on this tasting. It was afterwards decided that something extraordinary must be arrange to compensate this failure. Time will tell what :-)

Dish

Wines

Salmon

in Italian marinade

1990 Champagne Pierre Peters

Intense, apple smell of some maturity. Very dry in the taste, concentrated high acidity. Some maturity also in the taste, but will hold for many years to come. A rich chardonnay oriented Champagne. 95 points.

1988 Champagne Sugeot-Fenuil Special Club

Creamy smell with maturity. Soft taste with good concentration and length. This vintage is really good for chardonnay based Champagne. Drink within 5 years. 04 points.

Duck liver "Crema Quemada"

with  boiled pickled pork, apples and currants

1989 Gewurztraminer Heimburg, Vendagne Tardive, Zind-Humbrecht

Golden colour. Rich, creamy nose of apples, flowers and honey. Full-bodied taste with fine acidity and balance. 96 points.

1990 Gewurztraminer Goldert, Vendagne tardive, Zind-Humbrecht

Light golden colour. Intense and complex smell of roses. Rich and fat taste, semi-sweet with excellent acidity and balance, also in the finish. Very aromatic and delicious now.

Scallop Saint-Jacques

with salad and truffle mayonnaise

1995 Riesling Clos Saint Urbain, Zind-Humbrecht

Golden colour. Smoky and fruity smell. Fruity and long aftertaste with very high acidity. 92 points.

1994 Riesling Clos Saint Urbain, Zind-Humbrecht

Golden colour. Intense smell of honey, petrol and dried fruit. Very concentrated with an incredible length. 96 points.

Roe Deer Venison Fillet

with pasta and mushroom/bean salad

1990 Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Domaine de la Romanée Conti

Rather deep red colour. Superb complex smell of red berries and sesame oil with some maturity. The taste also youthful, fruity and aromatic. Long, balanced aftertaste, round and sweet, with some raw youthfulness. 95 - 96 points.

1989 La Tache, Domaine de la Romanée Conti

Enormous and super complex smell of dried fruit and Asian spices. Complex and stunning, but a bit less then the Richeboug below. Somewhat bitter in the finish. 93 points.

1990 Richebourg, Domaine de la Romanée Conti

Magnificent mature smell of red berries, dried fruit, soy and sesame oil. Much more evolved then the Romanée-Saint-Vivant above. The taste is also magnificent, aromatic, sweet from ripe grapes, and enormous complex and full. The aftertaste is unbelievable and expansive. Clearly the best of the three DRC wines, 98 points.

Almond Chocolate Cake

with raspberry sauce

1989 Rieslaner Mussbacher Eselhaut beerenauslese, Müller Catoir

Semi sweet with good concentration. 91 points.

1994 Gewurztraminer Clos Saint Urbain, Selection de Grains Nobles, Zind Humbrecht

Enormous proportions and concentration with excellent balance. Still very youthful. A perfect full-bodied sweet wine. 100 points.

Dish

Wines

Included experimental crab soufflé

with rosé pepper

2000 Altenberg Bergheim, Deiss

Deep yellow colour. Fat and sturdy nose of apricot and some flower, sweet and juicy, opens up more and more. Big proportions, a lovely marked acidity, elegant and powerful at the same time. On the tight side rather than inflated. 98 point by Robert Parker, we all agreed.

Västerbotten Cheese Soup of the House

with radishes, chives and fresh shrimps

2000 Riesling Brand, Zind-Humbrecht

Deep yellow colour. Wax, petrol, honey, luxuriant and lush, typically a Zind-Humbrecht Riesling. Marked acidity and sugar create a wonderful balance, thick and fat on the border for lack of elegancy. As good as the previous wine, thus 97+ being an adequate rating from Parker.

Duck Liver Tureen

with acacia honey and lamina salt

1982 Barbaresco San Lorenzo, Gaja

Rather dark brick red. Tight but seductive, the fruit smelling so sweet and hedonistic despite some bitterness from cherry stones, also vinyl, tobacco and lingo berries in the smell. Still rather harsh in the taste, but also fiery and soft acid. Outstanding wine with great personality. 90 poins from Parker is very mean :-(. The next two wines were also served at once to let the berseks choose themselves which wine to pair with each dish.

Fresh Pasta Duo

served warm with Pecorino pesto and roasted pine kernels

1982 Ch Latour

Dark brick red colour. Lovely tight Bordeaux, but generous sweaty horse, stable and barn. The taste is so well balanced between low acidity, round tannins and fat fruit. This perfect vintage is sometimes being referred as atypical for Bordeaux by crazy and ortodox Francofiles. (then I whould like every vintage to be this atypical). As expected, a splendid wine, deserving at least a nerly perfect score.

Charcoal Grilled Lamb Fillet

with butter fried polenta and red wine mint sauce

1982 Grange Hermirage, Penfolds

Very dark brick red. Fat and butter, so amazing in concentration that the Latour above seem to be the second wine to this. Not much of eleganncy but massive smell like from marmalade and jam. Sweet in the mouth but although without residul suger, as massive in the taste as in the smell. At least this bottle has mature into a perfect state, deserving 100 points if You argue like a bersek.

Three kind of Cheese

served with Caraway and Cherry Chutney

1970 Fonseca Vintage Port

Rather dark brick red colour. Fruity and smoky like cognac, very soft and well behaving, fluffy smell. Incredible balanced with soft tannins, smoth acidity well integrated sugar. A long, elegant  and smokey efter taste. I find the best 1970 vintage ports to be very expressive and those with intact balance are clearly superior to the 1977s.

Soufflé Grand Marnier of the Chef

with cream sauce and fresh berries

2000 Sonnenglanz Pinot Gris, SGN, Bott-Geyl

Golden yellow. The smell stinks of tropical fruit, thick cardboard Pinot Gris character. So sweet in the mouth combined with so delicious acidity and fat tropical fruit. Hard to beleive that wine might bee such a pleasure to swallow. A long super duper after taste. Deserves its 98 point by Parker.

Coffee with truffles

Wine Cabinet Berserk at Göran and Yasmin 2002-10-26

Wines

1996 "Y", Lur-Saluces, Bordeaux Suprieur

Medium dark, pure yellow. Some petrol and white spirit in the nose might be controversial. Some paper and wood. A kind of the same also in the taste. Perhaps more special than sophisticated.

1998 Sauvignon Blanc Moraga, Bel Air, Los Angeles

Deep yellow. Fat fruit in the nose with wool and butter, covering some nettle and gooseberry. The taste is very fat, typical chardonnay, long lovely after taste, somewhat bitter. A very rare bottle from an unique winery.

1996 California Red, Moraga, Bel Air, Los Angeles

Dark, ruby red. Warm, charming and somewhat mature smell, complex and cabernet based with spices and gingerbread. Rather tight in the taste, with a too short after taste to make the wine more than very special and rare.

1998 Clos Erasmus, Priorat

Dark, ruby red. A restrained smell, raw, earthy and wild, sometimes syrah sometimes something different. The taste was the point, sturdy, fruity but balanced, long subtle and a little sweet after taste makes this wine so great.

1999 Pin, la Spinetta, Piedmont

Very dark, ruby red. Herbaceous, spicy smell, lovely, complex, wet horse and stable. The taste so delicious balanced, with fine sandy tannins and proper elegant acidity, with a lot of fruit and fine attack. Wow.

1983 Ch d'Yquem, Sauternes

Amber golden (darker than I remember it). A lot of "bear glue" pointing to typically Sauternes, striking fruit and powerful sweet tropical feeling. A marvelous balanced taste, fat, sweet and powerful, with a super after taste. A real good wine.

Wine Cellar Berserk at Claes and Kicki 2002-03-15

Wines

1985 Champagne, Blanc de blanc, Sugot-Feneuil

Medium yellow. Overripe apples, mushrooms, generous smell of lovely matured champagne. A remaining lively acidity and very elegant and decadent. A good berserk starting shot.

1986 Mount Edelstone, Henschke

Dark, brick red. Lingo berry and raisins, soft and charming, and some discrete eucalyptus. Very sweet and hedonistic in the nose. A superb balance, more French then Australian, but superb in the taste. But it didn't stand the following...

1983 La Landonne, Guigal

Dark, brick red. Open and fluffy in the nose, brilliant with cedar and cold acidity. A very tough Rhone wine, with some underlying bacon and pepper, opens up more and more. Damned harsh in the taste, took me to Piedmont and Barolo, and  little of a pity for such impressing wine.

1996 Against the Wall Shiraz, Sine Qua Non, Santa Barbara, California

Dark, ruby red. Being the third Shiraz, white pepper finally stinks from the smell. Lovely in the mouth, fat and fruity, typically new world extraction. Very good.

1997 La Turque, Guigal

Dark, ruby red. Round and fruity smell fooled me to stay in the new world (not much right this evening :-). Very accessible and delicious, with nearly too much oak. The taste is the point, so entirely delicious, with sweet oak and no hard edges of tannin  or acidity. Very different from the above Landonne.

1995 Astralis, Clarendon Hills, Barossa Valley

Dark, ruby red. Fleshy smell, but not very revealed yet, some mint but rather French in its style. A lot of go in the taste, slightly too dry, but again impressive and strong. This wine finalised a superb range of Shiraz from all over the world.

1958 Massandra White Muscat

Light amber. Intense smell of glaziers' putty and enamel paint, a kind of old Beaume de Venice. Yummy, fat taste with a splendid acidity, fresh and well conserved. Very sweet, but balancing acidity.

NV Rutherglen Vineyards Gran Muscat, Chambers, Victoria

Beautiful amber. The smell is vibrating and extravagant, pure and fruity. fluffy and creamy. Vibrating also in the palate, very mature and soft, homogenous and compact and just perfect.

NV Rutherglen Vineyards Rare Muscat, Chambers, Victoria

Beautiful amber. This is very much as the previous, but multiplied with two. The nose is still more compact and also reveals chocolate and coffee. The taste is also one snap better, totally magnificent.

Wine Cellar Berserk at Christer and Gunnel 2001-03-24

Wines

1985 Ch Laville Haut Brion

Substantial yellow color. A nose from wax, oil and splint, both fresh young and pleasant mature, with lovely complexity. Fresh acidity in the taste, with some oak and good fruit and a potent after taste.

1983 Batard-Montrachet, Ramonet

Medium yellow. Very Burundian with lemon, wool, dill and parsley but with a peculiar flowery smell, sweet and sunny. Not a pronounced acidity, but no cow on the ice. Rather fat and sturdy.

1983 Grands Échezeaux, Dom de la Romanée Conti

Medium depth, brick red. Also very Burundian with lovely rotten strawberries, butchers shop and very raisin fruity. Fresh and fine combined with beautiful age. Also totally beautiful in the taste, but unfortunately the fruit on the meager side. Pure after taste.

1961 Ch Lynch-Bages

Rather dark, brick red. Typically Bordelaise with stylish horse, stable, earth, dust in a subtle and complex mix. Very vigorous and youthful, a noticeable acidity, but still superb.

1959 Coteaux du Layon, Dom de l'Arche

Golden yellow, some amber. Almond, honey, cardboard and wonderful sour dish cloth, but with a fresh acidity. The acid also as good in the taste, round and mighty but nevertheless vigorous. Some sweetness but not inconvenient.

1963 Graham's Vintage Port

Medium depth, brick red. Excellent, soft, silky complex and nutty smell. In the taste the same softness, sweet but not gluey, acid but no puckering, firm but complex, a very complete wine.
